Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER) is expanding its autonomous delivery operations in Chicago through a new partnership with Shake Shack Inc. (SHAK) and sidewalk-robot operator Coco Robotics. The collaboration brings robotic deliveries to Chicago customers, marking another step in Uber's push toward automated fulfillment.
The initiative kicked off with Coco's delivery robots deployed at two Shake Shack locations across the city, with additional sites on deck as the program gains traction. The goal is straightforward: streamline orders, improve delivery consistency, and provide customers with a reliable alternative during busy hours when traditional delivery can bog down.
The Mechanics Behind Robot Delivery
Coco's robots plug directly into the existing Uber Eats ordering system, which means kitchen staff can hand off completed orders without adding extra steps to their workflow. Once the robot receives the food, it travels along sidewalks and navigates through crowded urban areas before arriving at the customer's designated drop-off location.
The system is designed to handle the complexity of city environments, where traffic congestion and weather can throw a wrench into conventional delivery operations.
"At Shake Shack, we're always looking for new ways to meet our guests where they are," said Steph So, the company's chief growth officer. She emphasized that the robots are easy to operate and add convenience for both customers and staff, particularly when weather conditions take a turn for the worse.
What Uber Sees in Autonomous Delivery
"Coco has been a leader in autonomous delivery innovation for years," said Megan Jensen, who oversees autonomous delivery operations at Uber Eats. She noted that Uber is excited to expand its collaboration with Coco and deliver more efficient experiences for diners throughout Chicago.
Melissa Fahs, Coco's chief commercial officer, highlighted how the partnership aligns with Shake Shack's hospitality goals. "Shake Shack has redefined what a fine casual experience looks like," she said, adding that the collaboration supports the chain's mission of extending high-quality service through contact-free, reliable delivery.
On Thursday, UBER shares traded lower by 1.30% to $89.70 as the company announced the expanded autonomous delivery footprint.
