Elon Musk is once again weighing in on international politics, and this time it's about prisons. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO publicly endorsed El Salvador President Nayib Bukele's hardline approach to crime on Sunday, agreeing that tough incarceration policies are the path to safer societies.
The Exchange on Crime and Punishment
Bukele took to X to push back against critics who argue that imprisonment doesn't effectively reduce crime. His position? There's no substitute for the basics.
"A strong police force and a tough, well-managed prison system are the necessary first steps in transforming a hellscape into a safe, high-trust society," Bukele wrote.
Musk, who has previously supported some of Bukele's policies, didn't mince words in his response: "It is the only way."
Human Rights Groups Sound the Alarm
The endorsement arrives at a complicated moment. El Salvador faces mounting allegations of prisoner abuse under Bukele's administration, and human rights organizations aren't holding back.
Amnesty International has described the country's prison situation as "alarming," pointing to prolonged solitary confinement, extreme overcrowding, lack of timely medical care, and systematic torture.
Earlier this year, Venezuelan authorities launched an investigation into alleged human rights violations against detained Venezuelan citizens, including reports of sexual abuse and beatings. Bukele has denied these accusations.
Interestingly, President Donald Trump thanked Bukele in April for accepting custody of individuals identified as criminals by the U.S. administration.
The Numbers Tell One Story
Whatever you think of the methods, the statistics are striking. According to government figures cited by the Associated Press, homicides in El Salvador have plummeted more than 90% since Bukele took office, with 2024 closing at a record low.
Beyond its crime crackdown, El Salvador has also grabbed headlines for becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, cementing Bukele's reputation as an unconventional leader willing to take bold risks.
