Aeva Technologies Inc. (AEVA) just scored what might be the company's biggest win yet. The lidar sensor maker announced it's been selected as the exclusive lidar supplier for a top European passenger automaker's global vehicle platform, and investors responded enthusiastically.
Here's what makes this deal interesting: we're talking about a multi-year production program stretching into the mid-2030s, with vehicles expected to roll off assembly lines starting in 2028. The automaker, which Aeva isn't naming just yet, plans to use the technology for Level 3 automated driving systems across its lineup outside China.
Level 3 automation is the point where your car can actually handle the driving in certain conditions while you do something else, though you need to be ready to take over when asked. It's a meaningful step up from the driver-assist features most cars have today.
The automaker isn't messing around with this rollout either. They're planning to standardize Aeva's sensing and perception technology across internal combustion, hybrid, and electric models on the platform. That's a significant commitment to one technology provider.
What's particularly notable is that the company is switching from conventional 3D time-of-flight lidar to Aeva's 4D lidar perception platform. The difference matters because Aeva's technology adds velocity sensing to the mix, which helps autonomous systems better predict what objects around them are doing.
"After months of close collaboration, we're honored to be selected by an industry-leading automaker with millions of vehicles in annual production worldwide, for a long-term agreement to directly supply LiDAR technology for its global series production vehicles," said Soroush Salehian, Aeva's co-founder and CEO.
Salehian highlighted what this means for the industry: "This OEM views LiDAR as essential to enabling safe Level 3 automation, and their decision marks a pivotal moment as the passenger vehicle industry accelerates toward bringing Level 3 capabilities to consumers worldwide. This vote of confidence underscores the breakthrough performance of our long-range, velocity-sensing technology platform and reinforces Aeva's readiness to meet the rigorous quality, high-volume manufacturing, and performance requirements of leading global automakers."
The company said it expects to reveal more details about the automaker and production program in early 2026. Aeva also pointed to its existing momentum with tier-1 suppliers, including an ongoing long-range lidar series-production program with Daimler Truck.
Aeva Technologies shares climbed 18.18% to $12.87 following the announcement on Wednesday.
