Tiny Cars Are Coming to America
President Donald Trump has given the green light for "tiny cars" to be manufactured in the United States, marking a significant shift in the country's automotive landscape. The White House made the announcement Sunday via social media, sharing a video featuring what appeared to be a die-cast model of a Toyota Motor Corp (TM) Hilux pickup truck. "President Donald J. Trump has approved TINY CARS to be built IN AMERICA!" the post declared.
Trump had previewed the announcement on Friday via Truth Social, where he enthusiastically described the vehicles as "inexpensive, safe, fuel efficient and, quite simply, AMAZING!!!" He urged manufacturers to build these vehicles domestically, noting that "Manufacturers have long wanted to do this, just like they are so successfully built in other countries." The president emphasized that the cars could be powered by gasoline, hybrid, or electric powertrains, offering flexibility for manufacturers and consumers alike.
During a White House press briefing, Trump called the segment a "really cute" car category that's already popular in South Korea, Japan, and other countries. He announced that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had been authorized to "immediately approve" production of these vehicles, emphasizing their affordability potential. Trump specifically mentioned companies like Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (HMC), while Duffy noted that Toyota and other manufacturers could begin production if they chose to do so.
What Are Kei Cars, Anyway?
In Japan, kei cars represent the smallest category of vehicles legally allowed on expressways, with engine sizes capped at 660cc for internal combustion versions. These vehicles have historically come with substantial tax benefits for owners in Japan, though those incentives have recently been reduced. The tiny footprint and efficient design have made them wildly popular in space-constrained markets.
Europe Eyes Similar Regulations
The U.S. isn't alone in reconsidering regulations around ultra-compact vehicles. The European Union is reportedly considering new rules that would permit kei cars to be produced and sold throughout the bloc. Chinese EV giant BYD Co. Ltd. (BYDDY) has hinted at potentially bringing its Japanese kei car model to Europe if regulations allow it.
BYD has been steadily expanding its European footprint, with the United Kingdom emerging as its largest market outside China. The company sold 11,271 vehicles in the UK during September alone, demonstrating strong demand for its offerings in the region.
The CAFE Rollback Connection
The tiny car announcement arrives on the heels of Trump's recent rollback of Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards in the United States. Ford Motor Co. (F) CEO Jim Farley praised the move as one that will drive affordability throughout the auto industry.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) called the rollback a "big deal," claiming it would lower costs for cars and trucks in the U.S. by "thousands of dollars." The administration has also recently questioned certain vehicle safety features like automatic emergency braking and rear seat child occupant alerts, arguing these mandates unnecessarily drive up vehicle costs.
The combination of CAFE rollbacks and approval for kei car production signals a broader push from the Trump administration to address vehicle affordability concerns, even as critics worry about the potential safety and environmental implications of relaxing automotive regulations.
