Forget socks and gift cards. Gen Z has a new item on their holiday wish list: cryptocurrency. According to a recent survey from Visa, the younger generation is ready to embrace digital currencies as legitimate holiday presents, and they're way more enthusiastic about it than anyone else.
Digital Currencies Join Holiday Traditions
Visa's survey found that consumers are increasingly blending technologies like digital currencies into their holiday shopping and gifting habits. While over one in four shoppers overall expressed excitement about receiving crypto as a gift, Gen Z takes it to another level. A whopping 45% of Gen Z shoppers said they'd be thrilled to unwrap some Bitcoin (BTC) or Dogecoin this holiday season.
The survey also captured broader sentiment about the future of digital currencies. About one in 10 shoppers believes stablecoins will dominate the financial landscape by 2030, while 28% anticipate a significant increase in stablecoin usage by 2035. For context, Visa forecasts 4.6% year-over-year growth in total U.S. holiday spending this year.
When it comes to actually spending crypto, Gen Z is again leading the pack. The survey found that 44% of Gen Z shoppers expressed a preference for using cryptocurrencies for purchases, far outpacing other age groups.
Gen Z's Stablecoin Obsession
This isn't just about holiday gifts. Earlier this year, another survey revealed that 75% of Gen Z stablecoin users would prefer to receive their entire salary in stablecoins, making them the most committed demographic to digital currency adoption. Nearly half of Gen Z users make monthly stablecoin transactions, leaving millennials and Gen X in the dust.
The trend tracks with broader investment patterns. A February report on U.S. investment trends indicated that Gen Z is more likely than any other demographic to invest in cryptocurrencies in 2025, even with full awareness of the risks involved.
Influential investor Kevin O'Leary touched on this phenomenon back in August, noting that the younger generation was investing in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) right alongside traditional stocks. According to O'Leary, Gen Z views these crypto investment opportunities as having the same merit as stocks or bonds, treating them as legitimate portfolio components rather than speculative gambles.
Whether this crypto enthusiasm translates into actual holiday gifts remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Gen Z is reshaping what counts as a desirable present, and Santa might need to brush up on his blockchain knowledge.
