Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) (GOOG) announced Tuesday that it's made Nutanix, Inc.'s (NTNX) Cloud Clusters platform generally available on Google Cloud. For enterprises struggling with how to modernize legacy systems without burning time and budget on complete rebuilds, this is potentially a big deal.
The idea here is pretty straightforward: Organizations can now run Nutanix Cloud Clusters—NC2, in industry shorthand—directly on Google Compute Engine. This expands hybrid-cloud options for companies that need to modernize critical applications but don't want to tear everything down and start over.
NC2 enables businesses to shift regulated, specialized, and mission-critical applications to Google Cloud while keeping performance and operations consistent. The platform supports mobility between on-premises Nutanix environments and Google Cloud, so organizations can modernize at whatever pace makes sense for them—not on some consultant's arbitrary timeline.
Why This Matters: Avoiding the Re-Architecture Trap
Company executives said NC2 helps teams sidestep the time-consuming nightmare of re-architecting applications. If you've ever been part of a major systems overhaul, you know the drill: endless meetings, compatibility issues, workflow disruptions, and projects that stretch months beyond their original deadlines.
Instead, users can move workloads across environments using the same tools and policies they're already familiar with. That lowers friction across hybrid deployments and means IT teams don't have to learn entirely new systems just to accomplish what they were already doing.
The AI Angle
Here's where things get interesting. Google Cloud's data services and AI models integrate directly with applications running on NC2. The companies said this alignment lets customers tap into offerings like BigQuery, Gemini Enterprise, and Vertex AI to accelerate analytics and machine-learning development.
"The General Availability of Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on Google Cloud is a significant milestone empowering our joint customers to become AI-ready," said Saveen Pakala, VP of Product Management for Hybrid Cloud at Nutanix.
A senior technology leader at a global energy company said the ability to operate workloads on-premises and on Google Cloud without rewriting applications provides meaningful flexibility. For industries dealing with heavy regulation or complex infrastructure requirements, that flexibility isn't just nice to have—it's often essential.
Operational Benefits
Nutanix highlighted several advantages tied to the expanded offering. Those include seamless disaster-recovery options, consistent operations across environments, and the ability to scale cloud capacity during peak demand. License portability also gives enterprises more control over long-term cloud investments, which matters when you're making decisions that could affect your infrastructure for years.
One Dashboard to Rule Them All
Both on-premises systems and Google Cloud deployments get managed through Nutanix Prism Central, which gives IT leaders a unified operational interface. Nutanix said this reduces training needs and cuts the complexity of hybrid-cloud workflows. Fewer dashboards, fewer logins, fewer headaches.
Nutanix added that NC2 licensing will soon be available through Google Cloud Marketplace. That integration will allow customers to apply existing spending commitments toward Nutanix software and consolidate billing—always a welcome development when you're trying to make sense of enterprise software budgets.
