If 2024 was about big promises and bold visions, 2025 became the year when space investors stopped applauding PowerPoint presentations and started demanding actual results. As the year wraps up, the private space economy has essentially divided itself into two camps: the companies actually doing things, and the companies still building toward eventually doing things.
Here's how the space stocks performed in 2025, separating the launch successes from the launch delays.
The Heavyweights
SpaceX: Still the Undisputed Champion
SpaceX continued operating in its own universe this year. The Starship program achieved something remarkable in 2025: it went from experimental to routine. Watching the Super Heavy booster get caught mid-air at Starbase transformed from jaw-dropping spectacle to just another Tuesday in South Texas.
Milestones: SpaceX absolutely dominated with over 140 Falcon 9 launches throughout the year. Even more significant, Starlink finally achieved cash-flow positivity, validating Elon Musk's long-term bet on satellite internet.
Valuation: The company's most recent insider share sale valued SpaceX at approximately $800 billion. Some reports suggest it could hit the $1 trillion mark as the company gears up for a possible IPO in late 2026.
Rocket Lab Corp. (RKLB): The Execution Story
If SpaceX was the industry titan, Rocket Lab was the year's best execution story. The company proved you don't need to be the biggest to be impressive.
Milestones: Rocket Lab completed 18 Electron missions with a perfect 100% success rate in 2025. Yes, the Neutron rocket's debut got pushed to 2026 to accommodate final "Hungry Hippo" fairing qualifications. But investors largely ignored the delay, focusing instead on the company's rapidly growing backlog of future missions.
Stock Performance: Rocket Lab shares more than doubled this year, gaining over 120% and trading above $55 per share. Turns out actually delivering on promises works pretty well for stock prices.
Sector Standouts
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS): The Volatile Winner
AST SpaceMobile remained a battleground stock throughout 2025, swinging wildly but ultimately gaining more than 250% for the year.
Milestones: After months of anticipation, the BlueBird 6 satellite finally made it to the launch pad for a Dec. 15 liftoff. This next-generation satellite represents the key to unlocking true 5G broadband from space. Major partnerships with AT&T and Verizon helped keep ASTS stock elevated throughout the year's volatility.
Performance: Despite plenty of ups and downs along the way, ASTS shares climbed more than 250% in 2025.
Intuitive Machines, Inc. (LUNR): Moon Mission Success
Intuitive Machines shut down the skeptics with a textbook execution of its IM-2 mission.
Milestones: The Athena lander successfully touched down at the lunar south pole in March, deploying the PRIME-1 drill as planned. The mission validated the company's infrastructure-as-a-service business model. However, the stock cooled off in Q4 as investors focused on the expensive IM-3 build ahead.
Stock Performance: Despite the successful moon landing, Intuitive Machines shares fell more than 30% year-to-date.
Firefly Aerospace: The Lunar Pioneer
Firefly Aerospace emerged as one of 2025's breakout players, successfully executing a lunar landing with its Blue Ghost Mission 1.
Milestones: In a genuinely historic achievement, the Blue Ghost lander touched down in the Mare Crisium basin in March 2025. Firefly became one of the few commercial entities to survive the brutal lunar night. The continued success of its Alpha rocket launch cadence further established Firefly as a reliable space contender.
Stock Performance: Unfortunately, Firefly stock didn't mirror its lunar lander's success, crashing 70% in 2025.
The Watchlist
Planet Labs PBC (PL) and BlackSky Technology, Inc. (BKSY) are both Earth observation companies focused on improving margins rather than chasing aggressive growth. Planet Labs successfully integrated its Pelican fleet, while BlackSky secured a major NRO contract renewal. Both stocks ground slightly higher throughout the year.
Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (SPCE) remained in hibernation mode throughout 2025. With zero commercial flights this year, cash burn was essentially the only metric that moved. The company's Delta-class ships continue inching toward a 2026 rollout.
What to Expect in 2026
In 2026, the market will demand more than glossy renderings and ambitious projections. Investors want revenue, plain and simple. All eyes now turn to several critical milestones: AST SpaceMobile's commercial activation, Rocket Lab's Neutron rocket debut, and the potential SpaceX IPO that could reshape the entire sector.
The companies that can convert technology into actual business will thrive. The ones still burning through cash while promising future breakthroughs might find 2026 considerably more challenging.
