Elon Musk Calls Nuclear Fusion Projects 'Super Dumb' When Sun Is Free Energy Source

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is back on his solar power soapbox, arguing that companies backing nuclear fusion are wasting money when we already have a massive free reactor in the sky.

Billionaire Elon Musk is doubling down on solar power and taking shots at nuclear energy, because apparently having one controversial opinion at a time isn't his style.

Why Build Tiny Reactors When There's a Giant One Right There?

In a Sunday post on X, Musk made his case bluntly: the Sun is an "enormous, free fusion reactor" that can handle all our energy needs. "It is super dumb to make tiny fusion reactors on Earth," he wrote, urging companies to stop "wasting money on puny little reactors" unless they're willing to admit these are just science experiments.

He went further, claiming the Sun will produce up to 100% of the Solar System's power output, "even if you burned 4 Jupiters." It's vintage Musk—provocative, solar-focused, and guaranteed to annoy nuclear energy advocates.

Silicon Valley Bets Big on Nuclear Anyway

Musk's timing is interesting. Commonwealth Fusion Systems just announced $863 million in fresh funding, with Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) among the investors. Silicon Valley clearly sees something in nuclear fusion, even if Musk thinks they're chasing the wrong reactor.

Meanwhile, Energy Secretary Chris Wright under the Trump administration says energy prices will drop, blaming Biden-era policies. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports electricity prices jumped 13% on average since 2022, outpacing general inflation.

Tesla's Solar Bet Paying Off

Tesla's energy storage business posted 44% revenue growth, hitting $3.4 billion in Q3. That's now 12% of total company sales, up from 9% year-over-year. Maybe Musk has a point about betting on the sun.
