Turns out people will actually pay for AI. OpenAI's ChatGPT just crossed $3 billion in global consumer spending on its mobile app this week, and it got there faster than some of the biggest entertainment apps ever launched.
The growth trajectory is genuinely wild. According to app intelligence provider Appfigures, ChatGPT has pulled in an estimated $2.48 billion in 2025 alone, representing a 408% increase from last year. The app launched in May 2023 and brought in $42.9 million that first year, then exploded with 1,036% growth in 2024.
Speed Matters
Here's the striking part: ChatGPT reached the $3 billion mark in just 31 months. TikTok needed 58 months to hit that milestone. Disney+ took 42 months. Those are massive entertainment platforms with built-in audiences, yet ChatGPT blew past them.
Other AI apps are chasing the same trajectory. Elon Musk's Grok, which launched in late 2023 through xAI, has been tracking closely behind ChatGPT's revenue path since it started charging users.
The Revenue Engine
ChatGPT's financial success comes primarily from subscriptions: ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month. But Sam Altman's company is clearly thinking bigger. OpenAI announced Wednesday that developers can now submit apps for review and publication in ChatGPT's new app store, potentially unlocking entirely new revenue streams, maybe including advertising.
The broader AI monetization race is heating up fast. Google is experimenting with AI-powered advertising, while Anthropic is reportedly targeting $70 billion in revenue by 2028. Consumers are demonstrating they'll pay for AI tools, and the companies behind them are racing to figure out just how much.
