Humanoid robots are coming to the chip factory floor, and this time it's not a pilot program. Oversonic Robotics, an Italian company that builds cognitive humanoid machines, has signed a deal with STMicroelectronics N.V. (STM) to integrate custom-built robots into the chipmaker's production and logistics operations worldwide.
Think about that for a second. We're talking about humanoid robots doing actual work in semiconductor manufacturing, not just wandering around for demos or sitting in controlled test environments. This is a meaningful shift in how advanced chip facilities might operate going forward.
Starting in Malta, Spreading Everywhere
The deployment kicks off at ST's advanced packaging and testing facility in Malta, where Oversonic's RoBee humanoid is already on the job. This initial installation sets the stage for a broader rollout across other ST sites as the company looks to improve efficiency, enhance worker safety, and keep up with increasingly complex manufacturing demands.
For STMicroelectronics, humanoid robotics represents the logical next step in its automation journey. "A key parameter of the long-term competitiveness of our global advanced manufacturing infrastructure is our ability to deploy automation and robotics solutions at scale. Humanoids integration is the next frontier," said Fabio Gualandris, President Quality, Manufacturing and Technology of STMicroelectronics.
Gualandris explained that these robots are built to handle intricate manufacturing tasks, work alongside existing automated systems, and improve production flow while making things safer for human workers. The initiative, he noted, positions ST as an early adopter of advanced and sustainable factory technologies.
Oversonic's Big Industrial Bet
For Oversonic, this agreement is validation that its cognitive humanoids can cut it in demanding industrial settings. "The partnership with STMicroelectronics is a great source of pride for us because it embodies the vision of cognitive robotics that Oversonic has brought to the industrial and healthcare markets," said Fabio Puglia, the company's president.
If you're curious what these robots actually do, you'll get a chance to see for yourself. The collaboration will be on display at CES through live presentations of RoBee performing manufacturing-related tasks, with engineers from both companies on hand to walk through the technology.
STM Price Action: STMicroelectronics shares were up 0.89% at $26.05 during premarket trading on Monday.
