The holidays are coming, and if you're planning to squeeze in some trades between eggnog and unwrapping presents, you'll want to mark your calendar with these market closures and early bells.
President Donald Trump recently threw a curveball by issuing an executive order that closes federal agencies on both Wednesday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 26. That creates a luxurious five-day weekend for government workers. Nice work if you can get it.
But here's the thing: the NYSE and Nasdaq aren't following suit. Both exchanges confirmed they're sticking with their original schedules and will remain open for trading on both of those days, maintaining only the previously planned early closure on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Week Trading Schedule
Here's how the major U.S. stock exchanges will operate during Christmas:
- Christmas Eve (Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2025): The stock market will be open, but expect an early close at 1:00 p.m. ET. Plan accordingly if you've got positions to adjust before the holiday.
- Worth noting: The bond market gets an extra hour, closing at 2:00 p.m. ET.
- Christmas Day (Thursday, Dec. 25, 2025): The stock market is closed. No surprises here—even Wall Street takes Christmas off.
New Year's Week Schedule
The New Year's holiday schedule follows a slightly different pattern:
- New Year's Eve (Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025): Unlike Christmas Eve, the stock market stays open for the full trading day. Regular hours apply (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET), so you can trade right up until the champagne starts flowing.
- Exception: The bond market calls it quits early at 2:00 p.m. ET.
- New Year's Day (Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026): The stock market is closed in observance of the new year. Sleep off that hangover guilt-free.

How Markets Are Trading
Meanwhile, markets are heading into the holidays on a positive note. All three major indexes were trading in the green Tuesday at midday, with the S&P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), up 0.32% at $687.00. The Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), gained 0.28%.
Not a bad way to close out the year, assuming nothing goes sideways before the champagne pops.
