If you've ever tried to convince someone that electric vehicles are just as convenient as gas cars, you've probably stumbled over the charging time issue. Well, BYD Co. Ltd. (BYDDF) might have just eliminated that talking point.
Five Minutes to 250 Miles
A video posted to X on Monday by user Dominic Lee shows a BYD charging station in China delivering some seriously impressive numbers. The footage captures a BYD vehicle charging at 746 kW—fast enough to add roughly 250 miles of range in just five minutes. That's basically the time it takes to run into a gas station, grab a coffee, and get back on the road.
BYD's European Momentum Builds
The charging tech news arrives as BYD continues its aggressive push into European markets. According to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, BYD's November sales in Europe jumped nearly 222% compared to the previous year. That follows a similar 200+% increase in October.
The Chinese automaker is also exploring bringing its kei car—previously exclusive to Japan—to European customers, assuming the EU gives the green light to a new E-car class.
Tesla Faces Headwinds
While BYD accelerates, Tesla Inc. (TSLA) is hitting some speed bumps in Europe. The American EV maker has posted double-digit sales declines for the past two months in the region. Tesla is reportedly considering countermoves, including bringing its China-exclusive Model Y L and Full Self-Driving technology to Europe next year, pending regulatory approval.
