Elon Musk is back with his grand vision for humanity's economic future, and surprise—it involves robots.
The Tesla Inc. (TSLA) and SpaceX CEO took to X on Thursday to double down on his belief that artificial intelligence and robotics represent the only viable path to universal wealth. Responding to a video clip of himself discussing how to make everyone wealthy, Musk kept it simple: "Doing my best to make this happen."
The Robot Revolution
This isn't exactly breaking news if you've been following Musk's recent commentary. Earlier this month, he shared footage of Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot jogging and boldly claimed the machine could "actually eliminate poverty." It's a characteristically ambitious statement from someone who's made a career out of moonshot projects.
The broader philosophy here is that AI and robotics will fundamentally reshape economics by eliminating scarcity itself. When a user questioned whether money would even have value by the time today's kids turn 18, Musk offered a binary prediction: "Civilization will either be gone or AI/robotics will eliminate scarcity."
Work Becomes Optional
In a podcast last month, Musk expanded on this vision, describing a future where AI and robotics satisfy all human needs. His timeline? Within 20 years, traditional employment becomes optional. Not obsolete in a dystopian way, but optional—as in, you work if you want to, not because you have to pay rent.
Whether you find this utopian or wildly optimistic probably depends on how much faith you have in technological progress outpacing, well, everything else that could go wrong. But Musk clearly believes he's building toward that future, one jogging robot at a time.
