Russian chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov didn't mince words after President Donald Trump's latest meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, raising pointed questions about who exactly was representing American interests at the table.
A Question Of Representation
On Sunday, Kasparov took to X to highlight the attendees at Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy: Steve Witkoff, Stephen Miller, Pete Hegseth, and Jared Kushner. His reaction was succinct and sharp.
"Is anyone going to come to represent America?" Kasparov wrote, expressing concern that U.S. interests weren't properly represented at such a critical diplomatic moment.
The chess legend later amplified an open-source intelligence post quoting Trump's claim that "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed." Kasparov's response captured both admiration and frustration: "We are all Zelenskyy. But no one on Earth has his self-control."
It's a striking image—praising Zelenskyy's composure under enormous pressure while subtly critiquing the American political approach to the ongoing conflict.
Progress On Peace Framework
Meanwhile, Trump announced on Truth Social that he'd spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the Mar-a-Lago meeting with Zelenskyy, which he opened to the press.
The president characterized the discussions optimistically, saying the U.S. and Ukraine were "a lot closer, maybe very close" to reaching a peace deal. He noted "very significant" progress on security guarantees for Kyiv and ceasefire terms, though he acknowledged that territorial disputes in Donbas could still derail any agreement.
Zelenskyy posted on X thanking Trump for what he called a productive meeting. Both sides agreed to continue discussions, with U.S., Ukrainian, and European teams scheduled to reconvene next week. A follow-up meeting is planned for January in Washington, D.C., to hammer out details of the peace framework and determine next steps.
