A Christmas Eve Mission Change
Tesla Inc. (TSLA) just delivered record vehicle numbers in the third quarter and keeps posting strong energy business results. But CEO Elon Musk seems more interested in talking about robots and artificial intelligence these days, and a Christmas Eve post on X might tell us why.
"Am changing the Tesla mission wording from: Sustainable Abundance To Amazing Abundance," Musk tweeted. He followed up by saying "amazing" is "more joyful" than sustainable, suggesting he views it as the better word choice.
Here's the thing though: Tesla's actual website still says the company's mission is "accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy." The site declares "the future is sustainable" and uses that word repeatedly when discussing electric vehicles, solar energy, and energy storage. One section reads: "We design sustainable systems that are massively scalable – resulting in the greatest environmental benefit possible."
MarketDash reached out to Tesla for clarification on what's officially changing, but the company hasn't responded yet.
From Sustainable Transport to Amazing Abundance
Tesla's mission statement has actually evolved quite a bit over the years. According to reports, the original version aimed "to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport." That shifted to "sustainable energy" after Tesla acquired SolarCity and launched products like the Powerwall and Megapack energy storage systems.
More recently, Musk started using "sustainable abundance" as the company expanded beyond energy products into robotics and artificial intelligence. Now, with this latest wording change to "amazing abundance," he appears to be signaling an even lower priority on environmental messaging and a higher emphasis on consumer products like electric vehicles, humanoid robots, and AI technology.
The stakes here are enormous. Tesla currently has a market capitalization of $1.5 trillion. But Musk has said the company could eventually be worth more than $20 trillion based on its robotics and AI development. He's attributed roughly 80% of that future valuation to the Optimus humanoid robot specifically.
So this mission statement tweak might actually reflect where Musk sees the company headed. For Tesla investors and customers who were drawn to the brand because of its clean energy ambitions, this could signal that the endgame has changed. The question is whether amazing abundance can drive the same kind of passion that sustainable energy once did.
