Mondelez International, Inc. (MDLZ) expanded a voluntary recall of certain CHIPS AHOY! snacks on Tuesday, adding more products to an action first announced back in late December 2024.
The recall involves CHIPS AHOY! Baked Bites Brookie items, and the latest expansion means more packaging codes are now included in the affected batch. It's the kind of recall that sounds minor until you remember that choking hazards are no joke, particularly when kids are involved.
What's Been Added to the Recall
The company added one additional code date to the recall list: 10MAY2026. That's on top of whatever dates were flagged in the original December announcement.
Mondelez also included two more UPCs associated with pouches packed inside the recalled carton units. The action remains limited to the Brookie variety of CHIPS AHOY! Baked Bites, so if you've got other flavors sitting in your pantry, you're in the clear.
The Manufacturing Mishap Behind It All
So what went wrong? According to Mondelez, an incorrect blending step during production resulted in small clumps of cornstarch making their way into the finished product. Those clumps might seem harmless, but the company flagged them as a potential choking hazard.
The risk is particularly elevated for young children and older adults, two groups that are more vulnerable to choking incidents. The good news is that Mondelez hasn't received any reports of injuries or illnesses connected to these products. The company stressed that it's taking this action purely as a precaution.
If you've got any of these snacks at home, the company recommends checking both the UPC codes and the Best When Used By date before anyone takes a bite.
Stock Performance Context
Market data shows MDLZ stock has dropped over 8% in the past year, reflecting broader challenges for the snack and food giant. Investors looking for exposure to the company can also consider the First Trust Nasdaq Food & Beverage ETF (FTXG), which holds Mondelez among its positions.
On Tuesday, Mondelez shares were trading down 0.40% at $54.82 following the recall expansion announcement.
