Stock markets and bond trading will be closed on New Year's Day, along with major shipping carriers and some retailers. Banks, post offices, and markets resume regular operations on Friday, January 2.

As Americans ring in the new year, it's worth knowing what's actually going to be open and what's taking the day off. The short version? If you need to trade stocks or mail a package, you're out of luck. If you need groceries or last-minute party supplies, you've got options.

What's Closed on New Year's Day

The U.S. stock markets are taking a well-deserved break. Both the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Thursday, January 1, in observance of New Year's Day. Bond markets are following suit and won't reopen until Friday, January 2.

If you're expecting a package, you'll need to wait another day. Major shipping carriers United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) and FedEx Corp. (FDX) will suspend their standard pickup and delivery services for the holiday.

On the retail front, Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) and Sam's Club are both staying closed for the day.

What's Open

Need to make a shopping run? Several major retailers will be open on New Year's Day. Walmart Inc. (WMT), Target Corp. (TGT), Macy's Inc. (M), and Kohl's Corp. (KSS) will all have their doors open, though you'll want to check local store hours as they may differ from the usual schedule.

7-Eleven stores will also be open, operating with adjusted hours. If you need a pharmacy, select CVS Health Corp. (CVS) and Walgreens locations will be operating as well.

Everything returns to normal on Friday, January 2. Banks and post offices will reopen for regular service, and markets will resume trading during their standard hours.

Looking Ahead: Market Holidays in 2026
