Musk's Stark Warning About Political Future
Tesla Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk didn't exactly deny reports about his Republican spending spree. Instead, he doubled down with a warning that sounds pretty apocalyptic if you're keeping score at home.
Late Thursday, Musk took to X (the platform he owns, naturally) to paint a grim picture of what happens if Democrats gain control. "America is toast if the radical left wins. They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won't be America anymore," he wrote.
The post came in response to discussions about reports that Musk is bankrolling GOP efforts to help President Donald Trump secure complete control of the House in the upcoming midterm elections. Back in mid-December, Axios reported that the billionaire had begun funding Republican House and Senate campaigns with significant contributions, with plans to keep the cash flowing throughout the election cycle.
The Numbers Behind the Political Machine
If you're wondering what "significant contributions" means in Musk-speak, here's the reality: In 2024, he donated nearly $277 million to support then-presidential candidate Trump and other Republican candidates. That made him the single largest financial supporter of the 2024 elections. Not exactly small potatoes.
After Trump's return to the White House, the president handed Musk a pretty hefty assignment: cutting government fraud and waste through the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE (yes, really).
But here's where it gets interesting. Musk's donations didn't stop in 2024. He kicked in another $15 million to Trump's MAGA Inc. and the GOP in 2025, just three days before he publicly called for a third party during what became a very public falling out with the president.
The good news? Trump and Musk have apparently smoothed things over since then.
The Immigration Argument
Musk has consistently criticized Democrats over immigration policy, accusing them of supporting illegal immigrants who he claims are involved in government fraud. He's recently pointed to Rep. Ilhan Omar's election in Minnesota and the Somali community as evidence of what he calls "importing voters," which he frames as a fundamental threat to American democracy.
Whether you buy his argument or not, one thing is clear: Musk isn't being subtle about where his money and his loyalties lie heading into the midterms.
