Lucid Group shares climbed Tuesday after Trimble announced its advanced positioning technology will bring centimeter-level accuracy to the Gravity SUV, solving the notorious GPS problems in urban canyons and tunnels.

Lucid Group, Inc. (LCID) shares rose Tuesday after Trimble Inc. (TRMB) announced a partnership that tackles one of the trickier problems facing modern vehicles: figuring out exactly where you are when GPS goes haywire.

Trimble's RTX and ProPoint Go technologies will deliver centimeter-level positioning accuracy for the upcoming Lucid Gravity electric SUV, even in tunnels, parking garages, and dense urban areas where traditional GPS typically throws up its hands in defeat.

The technology addresses what's known in the industry as the "urban canyon" problem. Think about driving through downtown Manhattan or under a bridge—places where satellite signals bounce off buildings or disappear entirely. Trimble's solution combines satellite signals with six-axis inertial sensors to provide what the company calls resilient, lane-level positioning. It's the difference between your car knowing it's somewhere on Third Avenue versus knowing exactly which lane it's in.

A First for Electric Vehicles

According to Trimble, the Gravity will be the first electric vehicle to fully integrate its sensor fusion engine, significantly narrowing navigation error from meters down to just a few centimeters. That level of precision matters quite a bit when you're trying to validate lane position or enable advanced driver assistance features.

"This collaboration marks a major shift in how vehicles perceive the world," said Olivier Casabianca, vice president of advanced positioning at Trimble. "We aren't just helping the car find the road; we are enabling it to drive with resilience and reliability in the most challenging environments on earth."

The Trimble positioning system will come standard on new Lucid Gravity vehicles starting at the end of January 2026. Better yet for early adopters, existing vehicles will receive the upgraded capabilities through an over-the-air software update, the companies said.

Recognition From MotorTrend

In a separate development, Lucid announced the Gravity SUV was named Best Public Charging Experience by MotorTrend as part of its Best Tech Awards. The recognition adds to the positive buzz building around the model ahead of its broader rollout.

LCID Price Action: Lucid Group shares were up 1.45% at $11.86 during premarket trading on Tuesday, according to market data.
