Atomic-Level Ambitions
Tesla Inc. (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk is taking the company's chip-making ambitions to the next level, announcing plans to develop a 2nm chip fabrication facility that would put the automaker deeper into the semiconductor business.
During an interview with entrepreneur Peter Diamandis on Tuesday, Musk discussed how the tech industry has reached "atomic level assembly" on circuits, noting that there are four or five silicon atoms "per nanometer." But here's where things get interesting: Musk thinks the entire chip industry is doing clean rooms wrong.
Traditional chip foundries rely on clean rooms, which are highly-controlled environments designed to maintain ultra-low levels of airborne particles, humidity, and anything else that might contaminate delicate chipsets. It's serious business, typically requiring full protective gear and strict protocols.
Musk has a different vision. "Tesla will have a two-nanometer fab, and I can eat a cheeseburger and smoke a cigar" in the clean room, he claimed. His solution? "Wafer isolation the entire time" to protect chips from contamination, rather than obsessing over cleaning the entire room.
Nvidia Raises the Stakes
The timing of Musk's announcement is notable. Nvidia Corp (NVDA) just revealed its new Vera Rubin chipset at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026, promising over 5 times more power than its predecessor, the Blackwell chipset.
Musk weighed in on that development too, suggesting that the new technology would take over 9 months to become operational at scale and for its software to function smoothly. It's a reminder that raw chip power is only part of the equation when you're dealing with cutting-edge AI hardware.
The push toward in-house chip development reflects Tesla's broader strategy to control more of its technology stack, particularly as the company ramps up its AI and autonomous driving capabilities. Building your own 2nm chips is no small feat, but if there's one thing Musk is known for, it's taking on supposedly impossible engineering challenges.
Price Action: TSLA gained 0.46% during pre-market trading on Wednesday, according to market data.
