Micron Technology Inc. (MU) announced Wednesday that it's ready to start building what will become the largest semiconductor facility in the United States. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for January 16, 2026, at the company's planned Onondaga County, New York site.
After wrapping up environmental reviews and securing all necessary permits, Micron is moving forward with site preparation and construction on what represents the largest private investment ever made in New York state.
A Campus Built for the AI Era
The facility isn't just big—it's strategically positioned to capitalize on the AI boom. The campus could eventually house up to four fabrication plants dedicated to producing advanced memory chips that power artificial intelligence systems. With global computing demand accelerating rapidly, Micron sees this as critical infrastructure for the future.
Micron Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra will attend the groundbreaking alongside Trump administration officials, members of Congress, and New York state and local leaders. Mehrotra framed the project as a turning point for both the company and the broader U.S. semiconductor industry, emphasizing that it strengthens Micron's position as the only American-based manufacturer of memory chips.
Riding the AI Wave
The timing couldn't be better for Micron. The stock has surged over 234% in the last 12 months as artificial intelligence applications drive voracious demand for high-bandwidth memory.
Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar recently reiterated an Overweight rating on Micron and bumped his price target to $400 from $275—a substantial vote of confidence in the company's trajectory.
Shares were trading down 0.13% at $343.33 on Wednesday.
