WeRide Inc. (WRD) shares climbed Wednesday after the autonomous vehicle company announced it's bringing robotaxis directly to WeChat, the super-app that pretty much everyone in China already uses. No separate download required, no new account setup—just open WeChat and hail a self-driving car.

The move is clever for a simple reason: WeChat isn't just another messaging app. Developed by Tencent Holding Ltd (TCEHY), it's got over a billion users who already use it for everything from payments to ordering food. Now they can add "booking an autonomous taxi" to that list.

Where You Can Actually Use It

The "WeRide Go" Mini Program is live in areas where WeRide already operates its robotaxi fleet—places like Guangzhou's Huangpu District and Beijing's Yizhuang District. If you're in one of those zones, you can pull up WeChat, request a ride through the Mini Program, and get picked up by a self-driving vehicle. WeRide promises a safe, comfortable autonomous taxi experience, all within an app people are already comfortable using.

That's the real play here. By plugging into WeChat's massive existing user base, WeRide sidesteps one of the biggest hurdles for any new technology: getting people to actually try it. Lower barriers, more awareness, and a familiar interface all help build trust in what's still a relatively novel experience for most riders.

WeRide isn't exactly a startup figuring things out. The company operates over 1,000 robotaxis worldwide and has its sights set on major expansion. By 2030, WeRide plans to have tens of thousands of autonomous vehicles on the road as it pushes toward large-scale commercialization.

Going Global Beyond China

The company isn't just focused on its home market. Last month, WeRide teamed up with Uber Technologies, Inc. (UBER) and Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority to launch robotaxi passenger rides in Dubai, available directly through the Uber app. Before that, in November, WeRide and Uber rolled out Level 4 fully driverless robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi—making it the first Middle Eastern city and the first market outside the United States to offer completely driverless rides on Uber's platform.

So while the WeChat integration is about making robotaxis accessible to Chinese users, WeRide's broader strategy is about scaling globally and embedding its technology into platforms people already trust and use daily.

Price Action: WeRide shares were up 1.02% at $8.90 during premarket trading on Wednesday.
